The town was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, the son of one of the first settlers, Isaac Bull. His middle name, Solon, was inspired by the ancient Athenian lawmaker known for his contributions to democracy.
The first settlers arrived from Connecticut in 1820, establishing themselves in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Early pioneers faced numerous challenges, particularly with drainage and wetlands, which hindered initial agricultural efforts. Despite these difficulties, Solon Township eventually thrived as a farming community, supporting dairy farms, cheese factories, and corn and wheat crops. By 1850, the population had grown to over 1,034 residents. Solon was a pioneer in urban planning, being the first city to implement a comprehensive zoning plan, which helped establish a robust industrial base when it became a city in 1961.
Solon boasts over 687 city parks, 360 acres of Cleveland Metroparks, and three notable golf courses. The Solon Center for the Arts offers a variety of classes in dance, music, art, and theater, including a program for seniors over 55 interested in music or theater. The Solon Philharmonic Orchestra hosts an annual Young Artists Concerto Competition. The Solon Historical Society preserves the city’s rich history with a museum showcasing artifacts from the 1800s and 1900s, open on the second Sunday of every month.
