One of the cities of Cuyahoga County, OH, Westlake is a suburb of Cleveland located about 12 miles west of downtown Cleveland. Many companies are headquartered in the area, including Hyland Software, American Greetings, Nordson, Scott Fetzer Company, Equity Trust, and TravelCenters of America.
The area known as Westlake was first settled back in 1810 by European Americans as part of Dover Township. Around 1901, the northern piece of the township became Bay Village after seceding. Further secession led to North Olmsted in 1912 and Dover Village in 1913. To avoid confusion with the city of Dover in Tuscarawas County, the name Westlake was given in 1940. This village became a city in 1957.
The area is known for its arts and culture scene, including the Clague House Museum, which showcases Westlake’s history. The house was initially built in 1876. The White Oaks Restaurant and the Dover Gardens Tavern were both once lucrative speakeasies during the era of Prohibition. Finally, Lakewood Country Club is the only Northern Ohio Club to host the PGB-based Web.com televised golf tour.
